Seven Heavenly Virtues

Welcome.

The objective of this project was to exhibit the integration of both analogue and digital processes in a cohesive way.

With this project, I had the option of selecting one of two routes to take, the options being Seven Deadly Sins or Seven Heavenly Virtues. I chose to use virtues because I was drawn to the meaning behind them and what they represent. The goal was to create different compositions for each virtue. The final product was printed in a tabloid-size newspaper on 55gsm paper through the Newspaperclub. All of the photos seen in this project were captured on my personal camera or found from Pexels and Unsplash. I crafted all analogue and digital compositions and illustrations. If you want to see my raw images for this project, check out my Dropmark!

I have a loose theme of female and male presence throughout my compositions. The idea for this theme is that each virtue is challenging for men and women in different ways.

Design requirements for this project (virtues and type of composition):
Chastity: analogue collage, photographed or scanned.
Temperance: typographic solution, type as a solution
Charity: personal photo(s), full-color
Diligence: personal photo(s), duotone
Patience: found photograph
Kindness: found photograph, hand lettered type
Humility: constructed image, all elements and word in single photo
This image inspired me to add floral elements to my theme. I tried to hone in on the meanings of each flower and match them to my virtues when possible. This cover photo helped me set the tone for the virtues in my newspaper spread.
The idea behind this collage is that keeping a good relationship with God and staying steadfast in your faith will bring you so much prosperity. The white lily symbolizes purity and was made to stand out in this analogue collage for chastity.
Temperance is the virtue of having a strong sense of self control. I created this typographic composition as a representation of the confidence that you can attain when having self control. In contrast the internal dialogue surrounding them represents the temptations that you face daily.
This constructed image spread is focused on humility. I made sure to pick only a few items as a way to avoid showing the opposite. As I was arranging my objects to take this photo, I focused on the meaning that each held. The Lighting in this was as intentional as the objects chosen. The light highlights the bible and draws the rest of the objects in towards it.
